Game of Thrones: Season 8 Predictions
April 21, 2019
Game of Thrones is five episodes from its end. I have a lot of predictions, and posting them online is the only way to prove I was right. If any of these are wrong, I will delete this page and deny it ever existed.
Warning: The following contains plot predictions for Season 8 of Game of Thrones. Everything written here is speculative; somewhere between all and none of these predictions will be proven true during the final five episodes of Game of Thrones. With that, everything written beneath this disclaimer should be viewed as a spoiler, because I am never wrong
- The Final Battle will take place at the God’s Eye — The Song of Ice and Fire begins at the Isle of Faces, a weirwood grove on an island in the center of the God’s Eye, a lake in the Riverlands. It’s fitting that the place where ice and fire were wed would be the place where their story ends.
- King’s Landing Will Burn — Foreshadowing of the burning of King’s Landing has existed since at least Season 2, from Daenerys standing in a burnt Iron Throne Room to Lord Varys claiming Petyr Baelish would burn all of Westeros to be king of the ashes. This foreshadowing crescendoed in Season 6, when Cersei ignited the Wildfire beneath the Great Sept of Baelor, burning it to the ground. There’s more Wildfire beneath King’s Landing, in the Pyromancer’s Guild, beneath the Red Keep, and all over the city. Confronted with losing her position and her war, Cersei may be driven mad enough to attempt to ignite it, prompting Jaime to relive history. Alternatively, The bad boy in chief may swoop in with an ice dragon and claim a million more members for his army. Either way, I win the prediction game.
Characters
- Bran Stark – “You will never walk again, Bran, but you will fly.” So far, establishing that Bran has the ability to take control of living creatures at will has yet to be rewarded in the greater plot of the show. If Bran doesn’t skinchange into at least one dragon, we’re in for a world of disappointment. This prediction still leaves room for speculation, though; will it be Drogon? Rhaegal? Or the undead Viserion?
- Cersei Lannister – “And when your tears have drowned you, the [little brother] shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.” This one’s a pretty popular theory online, that the valonqar “little brother” referred to in Maggy the Frog’s prophecy is not Tyrion, as Cersei suspects, but Jaime. Now that we’ve finally come to a point where Jaime seems to resent his sister’s actions, she may only be a massacre or two from forcing his remaining hand.
- Jaime Lannister – Jaime kills Cersei for sure. You can’t change my mind. He’s the valonqar. Cersei tries to burn the city and he stops her. Also, he might be Azor Ahai. If anyone’s Azor Ahai, it’s Jaime. Or Jon Snow. Probably Jaime. To repent for his crimes, it’s possible he’ll join the Night’s Watch, giving completion to an arc that started when he joked about the organization to Jon Snow in Season 1.
- Definite: Kills Cersei
- Possible: Becomes Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, fulfills the Azor Ahai prophecy
- Sandor Clegane – Cleganebowl
- Tyrion – “The dragon needs three heads”. From the moment Tyrion designed a saddle for Bran to ride a horse in A Game of Thrones and Season 1, the book (and show) have set us up for Tyrion riding a dragon. Given that Daenerys currently only has two remaining dragons and that both driver’s seats are filled, we might not see him do it on the show. He’ll do it in the books though. Promise.
- Jon Snow – His is the song of ice and fire, the prince who was promised. But y’all already know that. If Jaime doesn’t fulfill the Azor Ahai prophecy, Jon might. Sorry, Dany.
- Daenerys Targaryen – Both the show and the books refer frequently to the Targaryen tendency toward madness. A subtler theme in both is the idea that Daenerys Targaryen may not be exempt from this madness. Our boy Samwell Tarly opened a window into the human side of her casual atrocities. How many folks have to burn before it’s time to get Nissa Nissa’d? Or maybe she sits the throne, I don’t know.
Anyway, that’s Game of Thrones Season 8.
We do not spoil.
